Setting your mind on heavenly or spiritual things is important for a fulfilled life rather than focusing and prioritising earthly things. The Bible verse about setting your mind on things above speaks of rising spiritually with Christ through faith and directing one’s thoughts and affections towards God’s kingdom and promises rather than temporal matters.

Orienting your mind properly is crucial because who you are and the outcomes in your life are largely determined by what you think about and focus on. However, allowing your mind to be cluttered or distracted prevents you from keeping this heavenly perspective. Therefore, everyone must intentionally manage their thinking.

A key aspect of setting your mind heavenward is seeking after four specific things found where Christ resides at God’s right hand rather than on earth. These four things that should command our attention are:

  1. God’s kingdom
  2. God’s Grace
  3. God’s Promises
  4. The resurrected life in Christ.

You can nurture a Godward mindset by pursuing these spiritual realities through prayer and obedience. Another fundamental part of mindful thinking is taking ownership of your thinking through self-talk.

Rather than passively listening to stray thoughts, you must verbally reinforce your commitment to righteous priorities by quoting uplifting scriptures to yourself.

Directing the mind involves seeking God’s kingdom wholeheartedly. Righteous people like Moses, Ruth, Abraham, and Joseph kept their minds set on God’s promises despite earthly success.

The main message is that you can train your mind to align with your spiritual inheritance over worldly distractions. Relying on God’s enabling grace makes obeying this heavenly mindset command possible until death, resulting in an eternal reward.

“The Lord gave the word: great was the
company of those that published it.”

~ Psalm 68:11
